Perhaps Trump will not fire Mueller, perhaps he will try to get law enforcement agencies to seize Mueller’s documents and arrest members of his team. Trump is obviously guilty of multiple constitutional and criminal misdeeds and if cornered he is unpredictable. He will not go down easy. Then again maybe Congress and the courts will back Mueller and the criminals in the White House will be arrested. A great article in today’s Washington Post, “In battle with Mueller, Trump has a big advantage that Nixon did not,” explores the issue.
I implore my readers to stay vigilant. And here is a response from a reader which thoughtfully expands on these issues.
Yes, Mr. Trump is certainly stupid enough to fire Mr. Mueller. After all, he has crowds of skeletons in his walk-in closets. My guess is that he has committed crimes long before he began to run for President, and then committed more crimes to cover it up. If ANY of that material is uncovered, he’ll be indicted. He knows it. He has been implicitly admitting his guilt by refusing to reveal his taxes, by firing Mr. Comey, by insisting that his financial records were off limits, and now by attempting to pre-emptively discredit both Mueller and the FBI. The man is obviously guilty as sin.
So yes, he will go to desperate lengths to delay the inevitable. His rational advisors are telling him that, if he fires Mueller, he’ll be impeached. But as the walls close in on him, he will certainly lash out in his desperation. He will fire Mr. Mueller.
At that point, the action will move to the House, where Democrats will file articles of impeachment. Now, the timing here is crucial. If this all happens quickly, then it might be possible for Republicans to refrain from impeachment in the belief that voters will have forgotten by November.
If, on the other hand, the crisis comes AFTER the spring primaries, then Republicans will be safe in their seats and will move to impeach.
But, either way, if they do not actually impeach Mr. Trump for his crimes, then there will be a huge wave of protest and the Republicans will be thrown out in November, the Democrats will take control of both houses of Congress, and they most certainly WILL impeach and convict Mr. Trump.
At this point, Mr. Trump might just be crazy enough to move against Congress, or claim that the elections were rigged. If he does so, I am confident that the military will arrest him. They swear an oath to defend the Constitution, not the President, and they take that oath very, very seriously. I have spoken with officers about this and they make no bones about it.
Mr. Trump has already inflicted serious damage upon this country, and I believe that it will get worse before it gets better. But “since we live in the best of all possible worlds” {at least, that’s what Dr. Pangloss assures us}, everything will come out just fine in the end.
Just kidding. I think we’ll see violence from the Trumpsters and a hard time for this country.
